The “SMART” Action Plan Checklist

Boost your productivity with a simple yet powerful technique: the SMART Action Plan Checklist.

This method combines elements of established methodologies like SMART goals (Career Development), the Pomodoro Technique (Study & Academic Tips), and mindful task prioritization (Mindfulness At Work) to create a focused and efficient approach.

It’s perfect for tackling projects big or small, especially helpful for entry-level positions where quickly demonstrating skills is key.

Step 1: Define Your Goal (SMART Goals)

  • Specific: Clearly define your goal. Instead of “Improve my skills,” aim for “Learn basic coding in Python by completing Codecademy’s beginner course.”
  • Measurable: Set a quantifiable target. For example, “Complete 3 modules per week.”
  • Achievable: Ensure your goal is realistic given your available time and resources. Don’t try to learn 5 programming languages at once!
  • Relevant: Make sure the goal aligns with your broader objectives.
  • Time-Bound: Set a deadline. For example, “Complete the course within 8 weeks.”

Step 2: Break It Down (Skills Building & Entry Level Advice)

  • Divide your goal into smaller, manageable tasks. If your goal is to complete the coding course, each module could be a task.

Step 3: Schedule Focused Work Sessions (Pomodoro Technique)

  • Allocate specific time slots for working on these tasks, using focused bursts of work. For example, 25 minutes of focused work followed by a 5-minute break. This helps maintain concentration and prevent burnout.

Step 4: Prioritize Mindfully (Mindfulness At Work)

  • Before each work session, briefly reflect on the most important task. This mindful approach ensures you focus your energy on what truly matters.

Step 5: Review and Adjust

  • Regularly review your progress. If a task is taking longer than anticipated, adjust your schedule or break it down further.
